Gratitude
Thank you.
Thank you to everyone that participated, everyone that came, everyone that wanted to come, and those that donated. The Bladeathon was a wicked success.
During the last week, including last night, we all raised $800.00. I will be sending the money to the Dominican Republic next week, however, if you would like to make a future donation to Uganda or the Dominican Republic, please include a note on the memo and mail checks to Hannah Nusz, same address.
Finally, I would like to make a couple of shout outs:
1. Hannah Nusz- you conquered so many fears. Thank you for not giving in to pain.
2. Kate Weins- Rookie of the year! You were incredible
3. Kerrie Emig- Thank you for taking charge and handling the money at the Brewery
4. 23rd Street- You were incredible. Thank you for your assistance, and thank you for being so kind and supportive.
We may have gone the distance... but the rest of you came.

Bladin' for the Dominican Republic
Education is not something readily available to children around the world (OR throughout the United States). The Dominican Republic, a beautiful third world country plagued with poverty, has a public education that does not provide well for its people. Therefore, those that can afford it send their children to private schools; thus the never-ending cycle of those with a disposable income receiving the best education, and getting the best jobs, and the unfortunate ones getting left behind.
Doulos Discovery School is a private, K-12 school in the Dominican Republic. It provides scholarships to over half of its students so that children of any socioeconomic status have a shot at an education. In order to provide this service, Doulos staff from North America must provide their own financial support.
At the end of June, 2010, friends Kerrie Emig and Keith Schoen are heading down to the Dominican Republic to teach these students. Kerrie will be teaching art, Keith will teach English. In order to help raise money for their endeavors, we are having part two of the series of weird sports for education: Bladeathon, 2010.
On May 11, 2010, KU students Hannah Nusz and Nicole Schmidt will be rollerblading a half marathon to raise money for this cause (and intend to also send more funding to Uganda). The race will begin at 4:00pm US Central Time, and anyone is welcome to send us off from the starting point at the Southwest Lawrence Trafficway at 34th and Iowa (right next to the Southwind Movie Theaters), and make a donation. Our course will be down the trail and back again, and then we will head to 23rd Street Brewery where a party for the public will begin at 5:00pm on the patio. Ticket prices are as follows:
All you can eat- brats and burgers $25.00
All you can eat + all you can drink $35.00
However, you are welcome to stop by and donate and celebrate and no cost! Meet people, make friends! We intend to blade to arrive at 23rd street between 6:45 and 7:30.
Please consider joining/supporting the cause. Checks with a memo of "Education" should be sent to

Elliptathon 2009: Fake Running for Uganda
Thank you to everyone who took place in this crazy-beautiful event.
On December 2nd, 2009, the KU Rec Center unknowingly hosted its first ever Elliptathon. I am assuming that it was their first one, at least, because they were less than thrilled about the offer to host such an event when I asked if they would allow spectators to watch for free. Everyone there seemed to be very concerned about my safety. I mean, I know that 13.1 miles is a moderate distance, but the Elliptical is also one of the machines that runners use to get a lighter workout without hurting their knees...
This half-marathon on a stationary pseudo-running-machine was born out of an honest desire to pick on my friends after their participation in, and successful completion of, the Kansas City Gobble Grinder. However, upon hearing the hopes of Isabella Mugalula, a Ugandan woman who opened a free school in her own house to provide education to children Orphaned to AIDS, it was converted into a benefit [quasi]run in 4 days. Hannah Nusz, my roommate and friend, had volunteered at Isabella's school in the summer of 2006. Isabella asked her in November to embark on an attempt to raise $1,000 for her school, so that she could work out of a school building to serve more students. The Elliptathon was our crazy shot at raising this money.
That is why, on December 2nd, 2009, I stepped onto the Elliptical at 3:45 with a much larger purpose in mind than my original intent of mocking Hannah and Jeff. For the next hour and 35 minutes, I moved in place, [slightly] filled with fear that the rec people were going to kick me out or something, and hoped that we would raise at least $200.00.
We did.
By the Grace of God, and the generosity of the people we interact with, the Elliptathon raised $800.00. Students, friends, and family stopped by the rec center, mailed in donations, or visited us at our race celebration. We were able to keep the school open for an entire school year.
